Dr. Duffuor’s Ahotor Project: Resourcing the NDC for Effective Grassroot Mobilization
Dr. Kwabena Duffuor’s “Ahotor Project” has been described as a novel initiative for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) by the Fanteakwa North constituency chairman, Daniel Amoafo Mayele. The project includes a PA system, 100 plastic chairs, and 4 sets of large canopies given to constituency executives across the country. These can be rented out to generate revenue for members, with proceeds being used to support welfare needs such as hospital bills, funeral donations, and school fees for party members.
During a meeting with delegates as part of his 4-day campaign tour of the Eastern Region, Mayele commended Dr. Duffuor for the initiative, stating that it would have a positive impact on the grassroots level of the party. He explained that constituencies have no source of income and lack the resources and logistics required to work effectively. The Ahotor Project is, therefore, a significant relief to the executives.
Mayele also expressed gratitude for the tents, chairs, and equipment provided, which will enable the party to generate revenue. This will ensure that even if they do not have money to support members, they can do so with the Ahotor Project materials.
Dr. Duffuor is vying for the NDC Presidential Primaries in May 2023, competing against former President John Mahama and former Mayor of Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, Kojo Bonsu. During his campaign tour, Dr. Duffuor has been assuring delegates of a rebirth of the party and a return to the grassroots. He has pledged to make the NDC a business-centered party with shares in major companies, provide monthly salaries to party executives, restore the heroes fund, institute a pension scheme for the party, and build regional and constituency offices.
Dr. Duffuor has been lauded by constituency chairmen for his contributions to the NDC and his impressive record on the Ghanaian economy as a former Finance Minister. They have assured him that his contributions will not be forgotten during the primaries.
For the most part, Dr. Duffuor’s Ahotor Project and campaign promises aim to empower the grassroots and ensure the party is well-resourced to support members’ needs. This initiative is a significant relief for constituencies that have struggled with limited resources for decades.
